In loving memory of Mingo Rangel

With great sadness, the Grand Union Orchestra announces the passing of our beloved guitarist and friend, Carlos Alberto Rangel de Andrade, known as Mingo Rangel. Born in Beira, Mozambique, Mingo began his guitar studies with Alfredo Costa and earned his Professional Guitar License in 1979. He was a founding member of Trio Odemira, celebrating 50 years of music, and a long-time member of the Grand Union Orchestra, performing across Europe and recording at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Mingo was an accomplished composer, whose songs were recorded by renowned artists like Paulo de Carvalho, Dani Silva, and João Afonso. He collaborated with Cape Verdean singer Lura and Galician artist Uxía, and his compositions included a setting of Federico García Lorca’s poetry. A passionate writer, Mingo published books such as Roupa Lavada and Na Ardósia and recently premiered his play Só Nós Dois.

A dedicated teacher of classical guitar, Mingo’s legacy lives on through his music, writings, and the countless lives he touched. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, Mingo.
