Tony Haynes and the Grand Union Orchestra receive Special Award from the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group
Recipients of the 2023 All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards were announced in a ceremony at the Pizza Express Holborn, London on July 4th. This Special Award from the APPJAG celebrates the contribution of Tony Haynes and the Grand Union Orchestra to jazz in the UK for over 40 years.
That contribution has been to show how much richer the genre can be, by introducing musicians, musical techniques and instruments from far outside the Western tradition, singers, songs and original lyrics, adding a touch of music-theatre and expanding the conventional perception of jazz. After over 40 years of work, still continuing unabated, receiving this award is welcome acknowledgment of our influence and artistic excellence.
